Krishi Vigyan Kendras

About KVKs

The Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS) function under the administrative control of the Directorate of Research, Extension & Farms (DREF). The University presently operates three KVKs located at Ramsai (Jalpaiguri), Ashokenagar (North 24 Parganas) and Digha (Murshidabad), catering to the diverse agro-climatic conditions and farming systems of their respective districts. These KVKs serve as district-level farm science centre and play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between research laboratories and farming communities through technology assessment, refinement, demonstration and dissemination.

The KVKs function as centre of excellence for transfer of technologies relating to agriculture, livestock, dairy, fisheries and integrated farming systems. Through a combination of scientific training, frontline demonstrations, on-farm testing, advisory services and entrepreneurship development programmes, they facilitate adoption of improved technologies among farmers, farm women, rural youth and extension personnel. The KVKs also act as important partners in implementing several national and state flagship programmes aimed at sustainable agricultural and rural development.

Activities

The KVKs undertake technology assessment and refinement through On-Farm Testing (OFT), demonstration of proven technologies through Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs), farmer training, vocational training, skill development and capacity building. They also organize farmer–scientist interactions, field advisory services, technology demonstrations in livestock, dairy, fisheries and integrated farming, animal health awareness programmes, fisheries extension, field days, exhibitions and Kisan Melas. Scientific information is disseminated through extension literature and ICT, along with implementation of Government-sponsored programmes including PMFBY, PMMSY, RKVY, Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP), NABARD-sponsored training programmes, PPV&FR awareness programmes and DAESI training modules.

Vision

To emerge as centre of excellence in agricultural extension and technology transfer by promoting innovation, scientific farming, entrepreneurship and climate-resilient agriculture for sustainable rural development through effective integration of research, education and extension.

Mission

To serve as district-level knowledge and resource centre for assessment, refinement, demonstration and dissemination of agricultural technologies through scientific training, advisory services and participatory extension approaches, thereby improving the productivity, profitability and sustainability of farming systems and enhancing the livelihood of farmers, farm women and rural youth.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North 24 Parganas

Established 2007
Location Ashokenagar, North 24 Parganas
Administrative Control DREF, WBUAFS
Area of Operation Entire North 24 Parganas District

Major Achievements

During 2025, North 24 Parganas Krishi Vigyan Kendra-I, Ashokenagar reaffirmed its commitment to agricultural transformation and rural livelihood enhancement through impactful research, technology assessment, frontline extension, and capacity-building initiatives. The KVK successfully achieved its annual targets by conducting 10 On-Farm Trials involving 180 farmers and 15 Frontline Demonstrations benefiting 542 farmers across diverse farming systems.

A total of 75 need-based training programmes were organized, empowering 2,250 farmers, rural youth, farm women, and extension personnel, while 399 extension activities reached nearly 3,800 stakeholders through field demonstrations, advisory services, awareness campaigns, and mass outreach programmes. The KVK surpassed its production targets by generating 38,000 quality planting materials, along with 26,000 livestock strains and 3.5 lakh fish fingerlings to strengthen sustainable farming enterprises.

Scientific farm advisory services were reinforced through the analysis of 18,500 soil, water, plant, and manure samples, exceeding the annual target and promoting location-specific nutrient management. The centre also enriched knowledge dissemination by publishing 28 technical and extension publications with a circulation exceeding 8,800 copies.

The KVK also generated internal revenue of ₹5.15 lakh through demonstration units and institutional activities, reflecting efficient resource utilization and increasing farmers’ confidence in its technologies and services.

Resource mobilization was further strengthened by securing ₹1.34 crore under the RKVY-RAFTAAR programme for establishing 120 Climate-Resilient Integrated Farming System (IFS) demonstration units in the coastal blocks of North 24 Parganas, creating a strong foundation for sustainable agricultural development.

Technology interventions demonstrated remarkable improvements in crop, livestock and fisheries productivity, resulting in higher yields, improved profitability, and enhanced benefit-cost ratios under farmers’ field conditions. Special emphasis on women empowerment through nutrition gardens, backyard poultry, and fish farming created sustainable livelihood opportunities and strengthened household nutritional security.

Through its integrated approach combining innovation, scientific validation, farmer participation, and effective technology dissemination, the KVK significantly contributed to enhancing agricultural productivity, climate resilience, income generation, and sustainable rural development across North 24 Parganas district during 2025.
