Extension and Farms

University Farms

The University Farms of the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS), functioning under the Directorate of Research, Extension & Farms (DREF), constitute one of the University’s most important facilities for supporting education, research and extension activities. The University maintains its principal farm complex at the Mohanpur Campus, Nadia, where different livestock production units are managed under scientific husbandry practices to facilitate practical teaching, research and technology demonstration.

The University Farm houses well-established production units for goats, sheep, pigs, poultry and ducks, which provide essential infrastructure for imparting hands-on practical training to undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting need-based research and demonstrating improved livestock production technologies to farmers, entrepreneurs and extension personnel. The farm serves as a live demonstration centre where modern scientific management practices relating to breeding, feeding, housing, health care, biosecurity and overall farm management are showcased. These units also support field-oriented research and provide valuable biological resources for academic and research programmes.

The University also has the Department of Livestock Farm Complex (LFC) under the Faculty of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, which plays a key role in imparting practical instruction in livestock farm management as prescribed in the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) curriculum. The Department coordinates practical training in scientific livestock production and utilizes the University Farms as an important teaching resource. In addition, the cattle farm maintained under the Department of Livestock Farm Complex provides facilities for practical exposure to scientific dairy cattle management, breeding, feeding and health care. The Department also collaborates with other livestock farms and institutions to strengthen experiential learning for veterinary students.

Besides supporting academic programmes, the University Farms contribute significantly to research on livestock production, nutrition, breeding, reproductive management and disease control. Fodder cultivation is undertaken to support the feeding requirements of the livestock units while also serving as demonstration plots for students and farmers. The farm infrastructure further includes diagnostic and research facilities that facilitate disease investigation, reproductive monitoring and other applied research activities.

The University Farms also serve as an important extension platform for demonstrating scientific livestock production technologies to farmers, farm women, rural youth and entrepreneurs through exposure visits, training programmes and field demonstrations. By integrating education, research and extension, the University Farms continue to strengthen the University’s mandate of promoting sustainable livestock production, enhancing farmers’ knowledge and supporting the overall development of the livestock sector in West Bengal.

Note

This table covers the major DREF and DREF-coordinated institutional training programmes reported in the Annual Reports. It does not include the hundreds of district-level KVK training programmes, frontline demonstrations, farmer awareness camps, DAESI trainings, or routine departmental seminars. If those are included, the total number of training activities during 2021–2025 would be substantially higher.
