• Departmental profile

    Since inspection on 17.12.2000, this Department is catering the courses of B.V.Sc. & A.H., M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. students fulfilled their course curricula and dissertation and research works from this Department and awarded their degree, respectively from this University. At present 4 (four) faculty members i.e. Professor -1, Assoc. Professor-1, Lecturer-1 and 1 Guest Teacher cater the academic and research activities of this Department. There are 3 permanent non-teaching staff and 4 Contractual staffs are working in both the campuses i.e. Belgachia and Mohanpur. This Department successfully completed 6 research projects sponsored by ICAR and different agencies till date. This Department has developed 1) live attenuated lentogenic strain Newcastle Disease Vaccine from local isolate 2) Live attenuated lentogenic strain vaccine from pigeon paramyxovirus and 3) reached almost to the end point for developing thermostable Newcastle disease vaccine. Accordingly, the same was presented in a global platform i.e. Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines which was held on and from 11th to 13th March 2015 in Ranchi, India. This work is recognised at national and International level. Except these, the Department also performed research activities on the following topics.

    • Seroprevalence of Canine leptospirosis in and around Kolkata city.
    • Studies on Trypanosomiasis in dog and laboratory animals.
    • Studies on Infectious Bursal Disease in Poultry in West Bengal.
    • Studies on Coccidiosis in fowl in and around Kolkata with special reference to pathogenicity and chemoprophylaxis.
    • Studied on seroprevalence of Hepatitis E virus in Rhesus Monkey in and around Kolkata.
    • Studies on isolation of E. coli and Salmonella sp. from rectal swabs of pet dogs and cats.
    • Studies on Pasteurellosis in duck in West Bengal.
    • Studies on seroprevalence of Caprine brucellosis and leptospirosis with special reference to reproductive disorder in Hooghly district.
    • Studied on seroprevalence, isolation and characterization of Infectious Bronchitis virus in West Bengal.
    • Studies on goat pox in West Bengal.
    • Seroprevalence of canine brucellosis in and around Kolkata.
    • Studies on abnormal termination of pregnancy in cattle with special reference to brucellosis and infections bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR).
    • Studies on respiratory diseases in broiler birds with special reference to mycoplasmosis.
    • Studies on isolation and characterization of Ranikhet Disease (RD) virus along with sero-epidemiological study in West Bengal.

     At present research work on preventive aspect of mastitis in relation to its immunogenic as well as protective activities is being studied. Another research work on paramyxovirus infection and its prevention and control is being carried out, which is a new aspect and has never been explored till date in India.
