• Departmental profile

The department of Veterinary Physiology is a pioneering department under the Faculty of Veterinary & Animal Sciences has long heritage by catering education and research on basic and applied physiology with its underlying mechanism of domestic animal and avian biological systems providing leadership in this field at the Eastern & North Eastern part of India since more than hundred years.

The department was glorified by headship of outstanding personalities like Dr. D P Sadhu, Fellow of Banting & Best Lab since 1954 under Bengal Veterinary College (the second oldest college of India, estb. 1893). The modern instruments like UVIR Spectrophotometer, Van Slyke Gas Analyser, Warburg apparatus, Bomb Colorimeter, Cold Ultra Centrifuge were used in the lab during that period, which guided the various innovative research activities in DRDO and Energy Commission. The familiar San Born Co. of USA made ECG and EEG machine suitable for animal for the department were gifted. Prof. A K Chowdhury was one of Dr. Sadhu’s partners in the department. The department is readily adapting to the enormous development of different fields of physiology, both in teaching and research activities. Under the headship of Prof. B N Roy, Prof. S P Ghosh, Prof. B Bhattacharya, Prof. M K De Sarkar, Prof. S Roy and Prof. S Sanyal, it continued the development and up-gradation of education and research activities. Dr. P K Das, Dr. P R Ghosh, Dr. K Das, Dr. G D V Pandiyan (presently joint as Assistant Professor at TANUVAS), Dr. D. Banerjee and Dr. J. Mukherjee are the followers of the senior faculties.

Presently the department is engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching & research including PhD. The department worked extensively in several fields of molecular and systemic physiology and made significant contribution in molecular dynamics, non-invasive techniques viz. ECG, USG etc. in ruminants and avian, understanding adrenal gland function in goat, growth, lactation, radiation and stress physiology, etc. The department has good laboratory with molecular physiology, immunobiology, cell biology, atomic absorption, electro-physiology units. The sophisticated instruments viz. AAS, Gel-doc, PCR, (-) 80ºC deep freeze, biological safety cabinet, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, ELISA washer and reader, cooling centrifuge, USG, ECG, Inverted florescence microscope, Bio-freezer etc. are utilized by the students, researchers and teachers of the various departments of the University as well as also other institutes to complete their scientific programme precisely.

The department is experienced to run several externally funded research and extension projects successfully for developing and dissemination of sustainable technologies to the field level. Recently, the department completed a RKVY funded project on development of a model for sustainable backyard poultry farming in different agro climatic zones of West Bengal amounting nearly Rs. 11 crores with active participation and coordination with other departments and several esteemed organizations which already elicited overwhelming responses among farmers, researches and planners of India. The department had also a state of art modern facilities to cater high end research and an ultramodern seminar room. In addition, the department is also associated with an ICAR funded network project on shelter management of cattle and buffaloes due to impending climate changes. The department is in the process of several collaborating projects with esteemed Institutes and Universities at National and International level.

The department is regularly conducting refresher’s course for professional upliftment and also have provision for short period molecular biotechnology course for science graduates / researchers.
