Teaching activities in the discipline of Veterinary Pathology started in 1951 under Calcutta University with the creation of a post of HOD Pathology as Dr. A.L. Mukhopadhyay at Belgachia. Subsequently Prof. M.S. Das, Prof. S.N. Nandi joined the post. Prof. S.N. Nandi recorded the first description of haemangioma in urinary bladder and bracken fern poisoning which published in British Veterinary Journal. He was succeeded by a Galaxy of renowned teacher of Pathology, viz. Dr. T.L. Som, Dr. S.Deb, Prof. D.K. Basak, Prof. Pratima Deb and Prof. M.K. Bhowmik. Post Graduation started in 1974. In 1978, section of Parasitology, Microbiology, PVM, VPH and Meat Science separated under B.C. K.V. In 1988, first Ph.D. degree in Veterinary Pathology awarded. In 1995, West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences established and Board of studies came into existence under the Chairmanship of Dr. T.L. Som, as the first Head of the Department. At present 118 M.V.Sc. students are passed out and 19 students are awarded in Ph.D. degree in veterinary Pathology.
The mission of the Department with the following objectives:
1. Imparting teaching, research and extension on animal and avian pathology
2. Consultative advisory and expertise to Govt. of West Bengal on domestic animal and wild life diseases
