Departmental profile
The department was diverged from the department of Veterinary Medicine during 1978-79. Late R.K. Ghosh and A.K. Chakraborty were the founder faculties. The department is engaged in undergraduate teaching programme abiding by VCI curriculum. The ICAR accredited the department as Postgraduate studies in 1988. Both the PG and Ph.D teaching programme are also being conducted simultaneously as per ICAR guideline.
Research programme is being conducted mainly in three disciplines : (i) Pharmacokinetic interactions of drugs in disease model of animals (ii) toxicological study of xenobiotics with especial emphasis on its metabolism in animals and (iii) efficacy of some herbal drugs in disease model of animals.
Different patho-physiological models have been postulated to conduct study the Pharmacokinetic interaction of different drugs in goats; while identification of metabolites and metabolic pathway different drugs and pesticides on Mixed Function Oxidase System.
Further, the department is involved to do some research work to generate data for regulatory bodies of the country in collaboration with different pharmaceutical/pesticide companies.

Project Research Findings Outreach Programme on “Livestock related environmental pollutants, contaminants and toxicants (Monitoring of drug residues & environmental pollutant)” Monitoring of drug residues and pesticide residue in edible tissues of livestock and evaluation of their safety is the major areas of work under the project. The project is with the objective to determine marker residues and to prepare data based monograph of pesticides and drugs in animal products with special reference to metabolism study of pesticides in farm animals. Samples were collected from open markets of North 24 Pargana, South 24 Pargana and Kolkata. A total of 107 chicken, 86 chevon, 95 milk and 88 egg samples were analyzed for antibacterial and pesticides concentration. Endosulfan and Chlorpyrifos were detected in egg and milk samples which were below MRL value.
